Free of external considerations, the poet’s cry is often the most pure and penetrating. Cognizant of the myriad troubles plaguing contemporary Taiwanese society, Heng-tai conveyed his deep-set passion for the world and hoped that his words might resonate with likeminded readers. In his age of widespread reticence and fear, Lin Heng-tai had no choice but to express his love for the world and to express himself in poetry. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Product Insight I have no choice but to be a poet. Lin Heng-tai published his Japanese-language poetry collection Birth Sounds of the Soul (Reikon no Ubugoe) in 1949 to inspire hope among his postwar Taiwanese compatriots. However, during this period, the shadow of Japanese colonialism had been replaced by the heavy hand of Chinese nationalist authoritarianism, and Mandarin Chinese was being steadily imposed as the island’s new official language. Lin Heng-tai’s poetry collection was banned, and existing copies were sought out and destroyed. The few precious copies that survived became quiet-yet-strong voices in the gathering darkness. The face of the “Sunlit Warmth” parasol is printed in light-blue and warm-yellow tones. The several opaque, white globes across this scene represent the chilled voices of Taiwan’s postwar poets, who were barred from commenting on the fate of their beloved island. Words in Chinese and Japanese are sprinkled as raindrops, with the titles of several poems defying the staid rules of diction. The black fabric layer underneath, reflecting Lin Heng-tai’s despondent mood, presents a stark contrast to the parasol’s light and cheery surface.
