His generation stood at the center of a cultural maelstrom that pitted Japanese and Western values against time-honored Chinese ways and traditions. Lai Ho enthusiastically took up the ‘New Literature’ banner as a tool of social enlightenment. His many works earned him the title “Father of Taiwan New Literature”. While rooted in the new, forward-looking Taiwanese vernacular, Lai Ho still had deep ties to Classical Chinese literary traditions. Three poems in Classical Chinese poetry included in the collection “In Memory of the Poems of My Bosom Friend Xi-Lie” and now in NMTL’s archives were written by Lai Ho to convey his deep, fraternal affection for a former classmate Xi-Lie. Lai Ho’s hand-penned words from NMTL’s archives are emblazoned across the face of this umbrella.
