It is chiefly grown in the United States and Peru, with a small amount of production also in Egypt, Israel, Australia and China. Formerly known as ‘American Egyptian’ cotton, the name Pima honours the Native American Pima Indians, who cultivated the species in the southwestern United States. Pima is an extra long-staple cotton, with fibres up to 50% longer than standard cotton. The long fibres are much stronger than short-staple fibres, making the woven cloth better able to hold its shape, retain colour longer, and resist pilling. The result is a product that is soft and silky-smooth while also being extremely durable and long-lasting. It is these qualities that make Pima cotton so highly sought after by luxury fashion designers across the globe.
